ANTS: A Night To Save
A few weeks of casual passion....
Now we sit and listen to Benny Goodman on iTunes
“A cigarette that bears a lipstick’s traces
An airline ticket to romantic places
And still my heart has wings…”
Watching a colony of ants on the Discovery Channel
They make a nest to house millions
White-faced and blind, they crawl frantically over one another
“They’re not unlike humans,” I offer,
Thinking of what we might look like from space.
Laughing, his brown eyes squint
Mouth, a triangle
Like a figure in anime
The happiest thing I’ve ever seen
“Yeah, like New York, Wall Street,”
Ants will surround a predator
And pull its body apart
Mostly spiders and other insects
Sometimes lizards too
“Are you in love with him still?” he asks
“No”
Like bees, the ants have a queen
She makes the babies
This colony is completely female
We get closer
Lie down
Put my head
On a strategically placed pillow
He thinks I’m funny
So I go home breathless
And with a few broken blood vessels
